VCR COMPANION
A review
At the September 22nd meeting of the S.
Broward Chapter, a very complete and
interesting demo was given by Brent
Paine on the new program, VCR
COMPANION. Mr. Paine is associated
with a home for mentally disturbed
adults and uses this program in his
work. He preceded his demo by showing
a video tape he had made for the home
in which several features of the
program were used in a dramatic way.
In essence, this program can be used to
dress up your home videos with
customized title or intermediate
pages. It can also be used for
business, school or social
presentations from a video tape or
directly from the Apple.
With truly simple menus, you can add
on-screen animations, texts in your
choice of different fonts, special
effects, fade-ins or outs etc. The
text messages can be made to scroll
vertically or horizontally in a choice
of several on- screen locations. A
series of clever icons can be placed in
any of nine screen locations. Color is
used lavishly for text and for
backgrounds. An extra is the ability
to import hi-res graphics you can
create from other sources, or use
Fantavision ready-mades. When you're
all through with your on-screen
creation, it can be saved to disk as
data or as a self-booting program.
Most uniquely, though, it can be saved
onto a video tape and the on-screen
diagramatic instructions are truly easy
to follow.
All in all, this is wonderful program,
is well thought out and is seemingly
user friendly. It can be run on any
Apple other than the //+, requires 128K
RAM, two 5.25" drives or one 3.5". By
Broderbund Software, it retails for $
49.95.

Software reviews are very common in the
computer literature. However, a review
such as this one may fill a niche left
unfilled by the others. Your
contribution of a new or classic
program review would be most welcome
for future inclusion.
